Well, I just experienced another breakup tonight. "Supernatural" is no longer my hot, shiny boyfriend. Sure, all was lovely for a while. But he quickly went from being my dream man into some greasy, fat bastard sitting in a trailer eating one of those Hungry Man frozen dinners. I dunno, I couldn't stay hooked on it like I did the X-Files. Ah, well. We tried. I'LL MISS YOU, WINCHESTERS. ♥
AND OF COURSE IT LOOKS LIKE FUCKING CBS IS GOING TO CANCEL NUMBERS AND I'M A BIG FAT FAILURE TURTLE WHO GOT INTO A SHOW DURING WHAT COULD BE ITS LAST SEASON. AIEE!!!
(I know the above sentence isn't grammatically correct, but fuck it.)
I'm starting to get more into gen fic, which is a BIG change for me, as the past ten years of my life have been slash-centric. I guess it's because that it's rare that I find a slash fic (in ANY fandom) where the character's sexuality isn't the focal point of the fic - or the character's life, for that matter. Why does a fic featuring a gay couple have to focus on ROMANCE and the RELATIONSHIP? I've read het or gen fics where yes, the couple was mentioned, but their romantic adventures were not the base of the entire story. I've found very few slash fics where that was the case. Which, okay, some of my fellow LGBT friends consider who they love/have sex with an intregal part of who they are, and that's fine and dandy.
Me? I'm hardly an activist on that front. For me, my sexual preference isn't any different from my taste in music, religious beliefs, etc. While I do have friends outside my tastes, I'm naturally going to gravitate towards people who have the same ideas and whatnot. However, there are some things I absolutely cannot stand in RL OR in fic:
overly angsty mopers, ridiculously liberal OR conservative folks (both are equally stupid and dangerous), whiny, flaming twinks...stuff like that.
(HUGE RANT: WTF is with overly twinking certain dudes in fics? For fuck's sake, I know it's supposed to be slash, but a gay man doesn't have a vagina. If I wanted overly-emotional, lovey-dovey shit in my story I would be reading het.)
That means I get annoyed when I feel that the author of a fic is basically Mary Sue-ing all the characters by inserting their (the author's) personal beliefs as the character's beliefs when 1) it's so laughably OOC, and 2) it's some sort of trait/characteristic that I can't stand. It's quite a selfish way to look at fic, now that I think about it. Does this put me in the wrong? As far as my personal world and fic preferences go, not at all. As far as the big picture? Probably yes. Buuuuuuuuuuuut...this is my caring face. -_____-
So yeah, it's hard to read slash fic without the "OMG WE'RE SO QUEER LET'S BE IN A PARAAAAAAAAAAAADE!" making me want to punch someone. Yes, there are a few fics that I've read where it's not totally based on TEH GAY~! but they are few and far inbetween.
Anyway, all I wanted to say is that I'm finding gen fic much better than slash fic (that I've read, plz to not accuse me of making generalizations) because the characters tend to be more well-rounded, the plot is better, the dialogue is believable, the author actually knows what they're writing about, and the overall writing is just really, really good.
It's been better in my experience, anyway, and since this is MY journal, my opinion totally rules.
Wow, that cut was not well-thought-out and all over the place, but I don't care. I just spent my entire night reading some most awesome Numb3rs fic instead of watching RAW and I am duly ashamed. OFF TO BED WITH MEEEEEEEE!

This is my huge gripe about mpreg as well. Hello, if I wanted to read about pregnancies and cute baby fics, I would be reading het! If you reallyreally need to write kid!fic, at least have them adopt the spawn, or something. Honestly.
This is what I like about the sci fi fandoms I´m in, even though the story is slash, it´s almost always about them having adventures in space, and fucking along the way.
ADVENTURES IN SPACE! ♥
Of course, one could always make the argument that I would be Mary Sue-ing characters by giving them my trait of NOT focusing on their sexuality. Interesting, innit? ~_^
